The long set up times and lack of manufacturing flexibility resulted in higher cycle times to produce the product. 3. How does the JITD program hope to correct these problems? The core problem facing Barilla is the high degree of demand variance that it experiences by product and throughout the year. The main causes of the demand variance are limited visibility downstream, and reliance on promotions to push product downstream. In order to increase visibility downstream, Barilla has developed a program that pulls relevant shipping information from their downstream partners. This allows Barilla to optimize production and transportation decisions given the information. Barilla ¡Ã‚ ¯s Just-In-Time-Distribution program (JITD) effectively looks at the daily shipping decisions made by distributors and warehouses, combines that information with each distributor ¡Ã‚ ¯s stock position by SKU and plans future production and replenishment decisions for each distributor. In order to reduce Barilla ¡Ã‚ ¯s reliance on promotions to push product downstream, Barilla plans to reduce the frequency and magnitude of its promotions. Managing Under Uncertainty for ABC Consultants - myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theManaging Under Uncertainty for ABC Consultants. Answer: The situation: This is the story of Joy, a woman who has been working in the ABC Consultants for 20 years. The workplace situation has been giving her sleepless nights, pain in the stomach and headaches. The increasing symptoms list scared the beats out her. Such was the conflict at her workplace that she even experienced a sudden panic attack, her first in the nearly 20 years of her work experience. There are various workplace situations or conflicts that crop up every day in organization like fired for being sick, unpaid after doing overtime and even the obsessive and compulsive behavior. The Issue: Joy was in love with her job, but in recent times she has been considering quitting. The boss she was assigned under for so many years have received a well-deserved promotion a few months back. Joy was then assigned under a new supervisor, someone who has been posed as a challenge for Joy. This situation cropped up one fine morning when the new supervisor of Joy confronted her of a complaint that has been lodged against her by one of her co-workers. The complaint was instead of emailing about the project to the members of the team, she should have just strolled down the hall and work out the information in person (Sonnentag, Unger Ngel, 2013). Joy over the years has been struggling with an invisible disability that made walking difficult sometimes. Recent stress within the workplace had caused the symptoms to flicker. Her doctor advised her to restrict the quantity of walking. Joy tried to explain all these restrictions and limitations to her boss, however the boss paid no heed to her words and moreover reacted harshly, threatening to dispel her from work. Moreover, the new boss stated that the management has not been happy with such reluctance from a senior pro like Joy, stating that face-to-face communication is important instead of sending mails (Gilin Oore, Leiter LeBlanc, 2015). The new bosss harsh behavior and threat of expelling Joy from work made Joy decide on quitting her job after discussions with her husband, Tim. Tim advised her of taking the matter to the next point that is meeting the human resource department of the company. The HR manager had a brief discussion with Joy and promised her of fixing a date for a detailed discussion on the matter. The Rational Model: As discussed in the above segment, Joy has been put under immense stress at her workplace by her new boss where she is being threatened to be dispelled from work for not being mobile at work floor, though everybody knew she had some restrictions in her movement. Leaving the job might be an easy decision that would enable her to get relieved from all the stress she has been going through. Though Joy took the matter to the next level, she was not sure whether she was doing the right thing. She thought of making use of the rational decision making model Define the Problem: On the first instance, Joy requires defining the issue. This step would be moderately easier for Joy, as the new boss of Joy has already identified the issue which is lack of mobility and agility of Joe on the work floor (Renfree et al., 2014). Her restriction in physical movement has led to complaints from her co-workers that Joy does not focus much on face-to-face communication or discussing over important topics sitting together. She is more into sending emails and chatting through online which is not what team members wants. Identifying the decision criterion: The next part in the process of rational decision making is in recognizing the criteria of the decision. This step is mainly about selecting the variables that would be determining the outcome of the decision (Gigerenzer, 2015). In the case of Joy, her anger and her pride has led to this conflict, she could have been more patient in making others understand what led to her being such immobile at work-floor. The criterion is mainly dependent on the values and beliefs of the individuals. Joy would be making her decision which would be based on her conviction that she would be discussing in-depth about the illness she has along with the letter from her doctor. Her criteria would be: How can she change the frustration of her immobility? How can an agreement be reached that meets organizational objectives, yet takes in her limitations? Allocate Weights to Criteria: The next step for Joy would be to allocate the criteria weights. This takes in the ranking of the criteria based on their significance to the process of decision making. According to Joy the biggest weight should be provided to the fact on the easy of meeting the objectives of the organizations taking into consideration the limitations Joy has on physical grounds (Pettigrew, 2014). The other weight would then be dispersed. The next segment would start in considering the solutions. Developing the Alternatives: The next part is developing the alternatives where the probable solutions require to be measured. No consideration would be there in this step, just the presence of generalized list of alternatives. Joy has listed down some of the solutions that are of alternative nature (Baumann et al., 2014). Joy might be more involved with the members of the team in person. Instead of emailing, Joy might have discussion with her team members over telephone or through video conferencing. Keeping a fixed time on weekends to meet Joy with all the issues. Under the present circumstances, Joy needs considering the list of alternatives she developed. Evaluating the Alternatives: Leading up to the meeting, Joy have been spending the weekends evaluating the alternatives and praying that all remains at place (Gigerenzer, 2015). Joy needs to see the choice that would be least impacting her fellow workers and team members yet solve the issue of the face-to-face communication that is so required for someone holding an important position in the company. After much of the consideration, Joy decided to submit a report before the meeting stating all these to ease the overall situation. Select the best alternative: This is the final step within the model that entails computing of the most favorable decision. This would be done by Joy after evaluating each of the alternatives against the subjective criteria along with selecting of the alternatives having the highest overall score. Reflection: The stress that Joy was going through would only be possible to understand if I put myself in her shoes. Workplace stress and conflict situations are not new in organizations; however matters like that of Joys are hard to find. Bounded rationality is a term that was first being coined by Herbert Simon. His argument was that under real situation circumstances, people would be taking decisions on the source of heuristics instead of the rule based methods of optimization. Information: Lack of proper information or information of incomplete nature often leads to most favorable decisions as the decision-maker; Joy was not fully sentient of the pros and cons of the decision (Chrisman, Memili Misra, 2014). Lack of proper information often leads to creation of boundaries and hindering the choice rationally of the decision-maker. I would not have probably hastily said to my immediate boss that I am unable to take the stress and that I would be quitting the job. If I would have been at her place, I would have asked my boss for a bit of her time and would have made her understand citing the medical documents. It was not something that was being done by Joy purposefully, but her movement was being restricted due to her immobility. She had the required documents in proving her situation. She could have handled this in better way, though she never knew that her general stating of quitting the job would become such big issue within the organization. Intellectual Ability: The issue at hand might be so intricate that the decision-maker might not be able to understand the complexity of the issues, leading to the sub optimal decision (Felin et al., 2014). If the issue had been logical, the decision maker would have been in a position in making the rational choice. This has been generating a boundary on the otherwise rational alternative of the decision maker. Joy has been working for more than 20 years yet she forgot the essence of face-to-face communication. I would have stated my position to my team members beforehand and let them know they are free to visit me with any issues as and when required. There was lack of any sort of communication between Joy and other team members as nobody knew the situation of Joy and the issues she was facing within. Lacking information led to such circumstances for Joy, which I would have avoided with prior discussion to with the people concerned. Lack of Time in taking decisions: The lack of time might lead to suboptimal decisions as the decision maker does not have enough time in evaluating the choices and coming to a rational alternative. Lack of time often leads such inappropriate decisions as one does not have the requisite time in processing the available information (Foss Weber, 2016). It is important to give oneself sometime at the end of the day to reflect on the things that have taken place in the day. Joy could not, she was so stressed out, she was facing health issues because of the stressed out factors at workplace. Joy had her husband to discuss these things, but she kept it to herself, she could have atleast communicated with someone close in the office. Even after the complaint came in, Joy was quick to react rather than r5efoecting on what went wrong and what has been the source of complaint. Reference: Baumann, D. J., Fluke, J. Jane Eyre Settings Analysis Essay Example

Jane Eyre Settings Analysis Essay In 1847, Charlotte Bronte published a Victorian novel called Jane Eyre under a male pen name, Currer Bell. The reason for that was that in Victorian times women were criticised for being emotional, and that reflected in their writing work. It is interesting to explore how Charlotte Bronte makes the reader emphasise with Jane Eyre in the opening chapters of the novel. Bronte does that by reflecting the settings on Janes emotional and mental state and by demonstrating that Janes values contrast favourably with those of a patriarchal household. The novels opening sets out a cold miserable scene, which reflects on Janes mental and emotional state. The narrator says: We had been wandering indeed in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; but since dinner the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre, and rain so penetrating, that further outdoor exercise was now out of the question. Bronte uses adjectives such as leafless, cold, winter, sombre and penetrating to set the setting of coldness and loneliness. Bronte uses nouns such as; shrubbery, wind, clouds and rain to emphasise how cold and lonely it was. The particular focus on loneliness is leafless shrubbery; it reflects a lonely shrub, which is left without its leaves. The book Bewicks History of British Birds, which Jane is reading shows great resemblance to Janes character. They were does which treat of the haunts of sea-fowl. Jane can be seen as the sea-fowl, because when she is at Gateshead Halls she shows a lot of fear towards John Reed. Jane resembles to the sea-fowl because she is a lonely, isolated girl, just like a sea-fowl is at sea. When Jane says, every nerve I had feared him, and every morsel of flesh on my bones shrank when he came near she again resembles to the sea-fowl. The dialogues in the novel influence the readers opinion about Jane. The way John Reed talks to her makes the reader emphasise with Jane. The first time the reader meets John he treats Jane like his servant. John says to Jane; Say, What do you want, Master Reed? was the answer. I wasnt you to come here and seating himself in an arm-chair, he intimidated by a gesture that u was to approach and stand before him. By demanding that she comes to him, Bronte shows to the reader how Jane is treated like a servant, which makes the reader sympathise with her. Bronte introduces John to the reader first, before Mrs Reed or his sisters, because he is the person that mistreats Jane the most. John even calls Jane a rat; That is for your impudence in answering mama a while since, said he and for you sneaking way of getting behind the curtains, and for the look you had in your eyes two minutes since, you rat! It is almost Johns role in the family is to keep an eye on whatever Jane does wrong and punish her for it. He refers to her as a rat, which shows that she has the lowest status in the household. John is seen to be important within the Victorian household. Despite the fact that he is poorly behaved, his mother, sisters and servants treat him with the most respect. While Jane is locked in the red room, we are told that John is the dominate person in the house. John, no one thwarted, much less punished; though he twisted the necks of the pigeons, killed the little pea-chicks, set the dogs at the sheep, stripped the hot-house vines of their fruit, and broke the buds of the choicest plants in the conservatory; he called his mother old girl too, sometimes, reviled he for her darker skin, similar to his own; bluntly disregarded her wishes; not unfrequently tore and spoiled her silk attire; and he was still her own darling. Jane explains that she has committed as many crimes as John and he is not punished for it. Mrs. Reed still loves him and calls him her own darling, despite him disrespecting her by calling her old girl, spoiling her clothes and more. When Georgina and Eliza call Mrs Reed, she immediately assumes that Jane has done something wrong and sends her to the red room, even though John was calling Jane a rat. The servants, Bessie and Abbot, also respect John more then the others. When they come down and see Jane and John fighting they respond with; Dear! Dear! What a fury to fly at Master John! and Did ever anybody see such a picture of passion! They also immediately side with John and shout at Jane for attacking him. This is because at those times there was an idea that the eldest male (John) should be the dominant in a Victorian household. This relates back to Brontes assertion that conventionality is not mortality just because something is done in a traditional way, does not mean that it is ethical. self-righteousness is not religion just because you believe that you are good and others are evil does not mean that god would approve of your ways. Jane does not believe that just because John is the eldest male, he should be the most respected. Jane believes that she should be treated in the same way that John is. Their likes and dislikes are contrasted to undermine the ides that the eldest male should be the dominant in the house. When Jane is sent to the red room and she is told that she should be ashamed of hitting her master, she does not understand how he is her master. She says: Master! How is he my master? Am I a servant? the idea of conventionality is not mortality and that self-righteousness is not religion comes in again here, Jane is not allowed to treat John with disrespect because he is a male. The servants, Bessie and Abbot, understand Jane, but do not side with her at all. They say: And you ought not to think yourself on an equality with the Misses Reed and Master Reed, because Missis kindly allows you to be brought up with them. They will have a great deal of money, and you will have none: it is your place to be humble, and try to make yourself agreeable to them. Abbot explains to Jane her status in the household; they say that she is not equal to Mrs Reeds children, and that she should be humble. The social divisions in the 19th centuries that the novel portrays are that it is not very important to be intelligent or sensitive, rather then being rich and male. Your sex, wealth and social position defines how you will be treated in society. The more respectable people in society in those times were the rich men, and in some cases they didnt have as much to offer as some women, or men that were in a lower social position then they were. Women in the 19th century were not valued as the men were because people thought that they are too emotional. Charlotte Bronte was forced to publish Jane Eyre under a male pen name because her work would not have been appreciated if it was known that a woman wrote it. Jane was forced to be hysterical when she thought she saw Mr Reeds ghost, to reflect that women were emotional. Bronte tries to reflect a difference between what seems to be good and what is good, which would ensure that external show is not mistaken for sterling worth. Jane doesnt give up on her beliefs (sterling worth) though she is mistreated. In the mid-17th century the main theme of novels written was illicit love (forbidden love). The novel Jane Eyre was informed by novels written in the mid-17th century because Jane falls in love with a married man, but doesnt marry him until his wife dies, which is the illicit love. In the 18th century novel were popular because the main characters were virtuous (morally good). Jane Eyre was informed by such novels because she was also virtuous. Novels of Sentiment were popular in the 18th century and such novels main characters were, virtuous because they were aware of their surrounding and had sympathetic hearts. In Jane Eyre we see that Jane is also aware of here surroundings and has a sympathetic heart. In the 19th century many novels used landscaped to reflect the depth of their characters feelings. This includes Charlotte Brontes Jane Eyre, her sister, Emilys Wuthering Heights and others. In such novels pathetic fallacy is used to reflect on the characters feelings. The opening of Jane Eyre is a good example of this as Bronte opens with a rainy, cold day that reflects on how isolated and depressed Jane is. In the novel Bronte shows how the settings reflect on Janes mental and emotional state and how Janes values contrast with those of the patriarchal household. Bronte also shows that the womens place within Victorian Ideology was low and that men were considered to be better.

SAT Scoring Error Get Someone Elses Scores By Mistake

SAT Scoring Error Get Someone Else's Scores By Mistake SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Did you get your SAT scores back and were surprised by how low they were?Do you think that you may have gotten someone else’s scores by mistake or that there was another scoring error? SAT scoring mistakesare rare, but they do happen. This guide will go over the steps you need to take in order to verify your scores, as well as what you should do to improve your score on future SATs if there was no scoring error. Did the College Board Make an SAT Mistake? It’s very rare for the College Board, the organizationthat designs and distributes the SAT, to make a mistake, but it does happen. One recent example occurred in June 2016, when the College Board incorrectly printed the amount of time students had on a certain section of the SAT, resulting in a lot of stress and anxiety for test takers. In 2006, about 4,000 students received incorrectly low scoreson their SAT because of problems with the scanning of their answer sheets. So the College Board does make mistakes. However, it's important to know that these mistakes are very rare. The vast majority of students who take the SAT have a problem-free experience, both during the test and when receiving their scores. Before you begin the process of verifying your scores, you should be aware that it is very unlikely your test was scored incorrectly. The most likely scenario is that you simply didn’t do as well on the SAT as you expected to.This can be disappointing to hear, and you may wish this were a world where the College Board descends from the heavens and tells you that there's been a big mistake, and that you really scored 400 points higher than originally reported. However, at some point you do have to overcome denial and focus on improving your scores for future exams. It's also important to remember that, if there was a mistake, fixing it may not always raise your scores. Sometimes, correcting a scoring error will lower your SAT score, and there is no way to undo this, as all adjusted scores are final. Potential Causes of SAT Scoring Errors There are multiple reasons a test may have been scored incorrectly. Below are some of the most common causes of scoring errors. Errors Caused by the College Board Sending a test taker the wrong score report. Incorrectly printing a question or section time on a test booklet. Problems with scanning answer sheets or essays. Errors Caused by the Test Taker Filling answers in for the wrong section. Filling in the wrong test identifying code. Writing the essay with pen instead of pencil. Incorrectly filling in answer bubbles (e.g. not filling the bubble in all the way, not shading dark enough, etc.). (Josh Davis/Flickr) How to Learn If There Was a Scoring Error There are a couple of actions you can take to determine whether your score is really the result of an error. Review Your Free Score Report Before taking any action, you should carefully review your official score report, which you will receive about five weeks after you take the SAT.On your score report, you can see how many questions you answered correctly, how many you answered incorrectly, and how many questions you didn’t answer at all.It also allows you to see a copy of your essay. Your score report also breaks down your results based on SAT section, question type, and question difficulty.Check over these numbers and see if there is anything unusual about them. For example, does your score report state that you omitted four answers when you are certain you didn’t skip any questions? If you believe there is a mistake with your score report, proceed to the next step. Request Student Answer Verification If you believe your SAT scores are incorrect, College Board offers two student verification services, although only one is available for each test. Even if you don't suspect that your exam was graded incorrectly, these services can be very helpful for future studying because they can help you identify the specific areas where you need to improve. You can order these services when you register for the SAT or up to five months after you take the test.If you are ordering after you registered for the SAT, you can order online by visiting MySAT and selecting â€Å"Order Verification† under â€Å"My Scores.† You can also order byphone or via post. 1. Question and Answer Service This service is available for May test-takers worldwide and October and January test-takers in the US and Canada. If you order the Question and Answer Service, you will receive: A booklet containing the SAT questions from the exam, as well as your answers to each of the questions. The test answer key. Information for each question that states what subject the question is asking about and how difficult the question is. Question and Answer Service costs $18.00 (if you didn’t have a fee waiver), and materials will be mailed 6-8 weeks after the exam. 2. Student Answer Service This service is available for all other test dates that don't offer Question and Answer Service. If you order this service you'llreceive a computer generated report containing: Which question numbers you answered correctly, which you answered incorrectly, and which questions you didn’t answer. Information about the type of test questions and level of difficulty for each question. This information is more in-depth than your free score report because it tells you for each question if you got it right, wrong, or left it blank. However, unlike the Question and Answer Service, the actual test questions and answers are not included.Student Answer Service costs $13.50 (if you didn’t have a fee waiver), and materials will be mailed 6-8 weeks after the exam. If, after ordering a verification service, you still believe your SAT scores are incorrect, you can also request hand-scoring. Request Hand Scoring The final option you have is to request hand scoring of your exam. Hand scoring is the most rigorous score verification service that College Board offers, and ifyou order it, your entire multiple-choice answer sheet and/or your essay will be manually reviewed. You can request hand scoring if, after ordering student answer verification, you still believe your exam was graded incorrectly. In most cases you'll want to order student answer verification before hand scoring because student answer verification is cheaper and can give you a lot of useful information that, in most cases, convinces you that your test was graded properly. However, you can also order hand scoring without ordering student answer verification firstif you think there is an issue that will be solved by hand scoring. It's also important to note that, if you order hand scoring, you will be unable to order student answer verification services afterward if you hadn't already ordered them. Reasons to request hand scoring before student answer verification: You think you wrote your essay with pen instead of pencil. Your essay isn’t visible on your free score report. You think you bubbled youranswers in on the wrong section. You think youused the wrong test identifying code. You can request hand scoring for your multiple choice answers, your essay, or both. Having your multiple choice answers and your essay hand scored each cost $55, or $27.50 each if you had a fee waiver. Hand Scoring for Multiple-Choice Questions If you want to have your multiple-choice answers hand scored, your entire answer sheet will be reviewed; you cannot request hand scoring for only certain sections of the test.If the person hand scoring your exam finds that you marked your answers correctly, but there was a mistake in the scanning or scoring process, then your hand scoring fee will be refunded, and your score will be updated. If it’s found that you made an â€Å"obvious error† on your answer sheet, such as filling answers in on the wrong section or using the wrong test identifying code, then your score will be updated, but your hand scoring fee will not be refunded. If it’s found that you did not follow instructions for filling in answers (for example, you didn’t completely fill in answer bubbles or filled in multiple circles in a single row/column), your score will not be changed, and you will not be refunded the hand scoring fee. Hand Scoring for the Essay If you request hand scoring of your essay, be aware that your essay will NOT be reread.Hand scoring of your essay only includes determining whether there was an error in the scanning or processing of the essay scores assigned by the two graders who read your essay. If an error is found, your score will be adjusted and you will be refunded your hand scoring fee. If you wrote your essay in pen, it may not have scanned properly. You can check this by looking at your free online score report, where a scanned copy of your essay is visible. If the essay is unreadable or appears blank, you may want to request that it be hand scored. If you wrote your essay in pen, you will not have your hand scoring fee refunded, even if your essay score changes. Read on to find out what to do. Don't despair if there wasn't a grading error. There are ways to raise your score! What to Do If There Wasn't a Scoring Error First of all, don’t feel like it is the end of the world if your SAT score is lower than you thought it would be. Your standardized test scores are only one component of your college applications, and you likely have time to retake the SAT and aim for a higher score. The College Board also offers a service called Score Choice that allows you to choose which SAT scores you send to schools. As long as the schools you’re applying to don’t require you to send all your SAT scores (and we have a complete list of schools that require all SAT scores sent), then a low SAT score will not affect your application if you retake the SAT and receive a higher score. It is also normal for your SAT scores to fluctuate a bit. Drops in score of up to 150 points are normal and can occur just due to chance. This is especially true if you had a high score (680+) on previous SAT sections. Check out our guide to learn more about changes in SAT scoresand what a normal drop is and isn’t. Financial and Corporate Actions of Laird plc Essay

Financial and Corporate Actions of Laird plc - Essay Example Materials division manufactures equipment that shields electromagnetic interferences, thermal management systems, signal integrity equipment, etc (Laird, 2014c). The global electronics and instruments industry has seen a growth of 4.3 percent in the year 2011 and has been evaluated at $1,844.3 billion (MarketLine, 2012). This study is focused on the company’s financial details including the company turnover, industry performance, and market report and market share. It also includes the last few years’ financial performances of the company, its financial activities and its internal and external performance analysis. As stated in the above figure, the company had made the highest revenue in 2011, as it discontinued some of its operations that year, which added to the total revenue (Laird, 2014e). However the revenues generated from the continued operation has been increasing:  £491.3 min 2011,  £520.2 min 2012 and  £537 min 2013 (Laird, 2014d). The profitability has decreased severely in 2011 and again increased in 2013, but in the recent year, it has been seen to have a downward trend (Laird, 2014d). The downward trend is mostly because of the lower sales volume due to high competition and the high fixed cost of operation (Morningstar, 2014a). The operating profit has increased from 2011 and is almost steady in past two years. It is clearly seen that after discontinuing some of its operations, Laird has increased its profitability. In the last year, i.e.2013, the Performance Materials division made revenue of  £342.8 million, which is 6 percent more than previous year’s revenue that is  £324.7 million. The IT and Telecom sector made the maximum revenue of 35 percent, followed by the Smartphone business which made 24 percent. The Wireless Systems division made revenue of  £194.2 million which is 1 percent less than the previous year that is  £195.5 million.

Managing Performance in Turbulent Times Research Paper

Managing Performance in Turbulent Times - Research Paper Example This paper examines how Google competes in the world of the internet and e-commerce. It examines the various points which Google uses to gain an advantage of its competitors and remain at the top of the industry. Barrows & Nechy (2011 p85) identify that the brain behind the success of Google lies in its ability to innovate. As compared to its competitors, Google spends more time and effort to identify new communication systems and methods at different points in time. Although Google started as a search engine company, it spent time and money to research and identify the true needs and desires of customers. In 2005, they launched personal email services which they believed was in demand by the markets. â€Å"They pursue a strategy that aims at increasing the capacity of computers and communication† (Png & Lehman, 2007 p3). This means that research and development are a fundamental part of Google. They put in more effort to find out what consumers need at every point in time and work to provide that specific service according to the highest standards and expectations possible. Google, therefore, sets out to organize the world's information rather than just make a profit for the sake of getting money from the consumers (Carter et al, 2011 p147). They, therefore, try to find ways of satisfying consumer needs at specific times. Google, therefore, has competitors not only in the normal internet companies but also, traditional publishers and other outlets. Google is aware that it operates in one of the most turbulent industries in the world. They, therefore, appreciate the fact that consumer needs change at a regular interval. Google, therefore, changes regularly to meet these demands. On the average, Google makes major changes to its strategy each month (Carter et al, 2011 p148). The internal structures of Google support its vision of leading in innovation. Googles workers are grouped in teams  of 20 – 50 employees under a single manager.

Restrictionist Policy, Mexican Labor, and Immigration Essay Example for Free

Restrictionist Policy, Mexican Labor, and Immigration Essay The article on Jewish refugees, Mexican guestworkers and administrative politics vividly describes the immigration policies that the United States followed during the turn of the twentieth century.   A cursory reading of the article would show what type of policy regime the United States followed with regards immigration and the factors that affected the same.   The article also depicted the different treatments towards Southern and/or Latin American immigrants, more specifically Mexicans, and European and/or Asian immigrants, more specifically Jewish Germans.    This paper is a summary of the article, focusing on the two abovementioned topics.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The United States immigration policy during the turn of the twentieth century was coined to be a two-tiered bureaucracy.   The first layer was the new State Department and consular officials â€Å"employed exclusionary powers to all but shut down European and Asian immigration.†Ã‚   The second layer was administered by the Labor Department, which was characterized by the legal and illegal immigration of southern and Latin Americans, more specifically the Mexicans.   This second layer was actually described as an â€Å"iron triangle,† illustrated by â€Å"southwestern growers, immigration bureau officials, and powerful congressional committees dominated by southern and western conservatives.†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This two-tiered immigration regime was actually a result of the rise of the World War I protectionist state, wherein there was a need for self-defense against foreigners since they were considered as dangerous and/or inferior.   This protectionist regime is highlighted by the Passport Control Act of 1918 wherein aliens are required to obtain a visa from consular officials abroad before they were allowed to enter the United States.    Note however that despite the end of the war, there was a move to continue implementing the Passport Control Act of 1918 as the country is still vulnerable to national security threats.   This law actually complemented the Immigration Act of 1917 and both previous laws were in turn supported by the 1924 Quota Act wherein inspections overseas where done prior to embarkation for the United States.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The restrictionist or nativist regime being discussed by the article was illustrated by two examples.   The first example is one for the first layer, or the shutting down if immigration to Europeans and Asians.   In fact, this shut down affected not only workers but refugees as well.   With the rise of Nazi Germany in Europe, and ideas of anti-Semitism spreading fast, many German Jews and Germans who opposed the Nazi Government were seeking asylum, to protect themselves from the Nazis. However, there seemed to be an unmistakable prejudice against the Germans and the Jews, bolted by an executive order in 1930 which barred aliens who were likely to be of public charge (or those wage earners who are coming to the United States without means of support).   There was a move to loosen this strict executive order by allowing bonds for entering refugees, which was actually ineffective since this was a double barrier for the refugees who were seeking asylum:   they needed a bond to enter the United States and yet the Nazi Government did not allow them to take capital out of the country. True, it was claimed that the idea of asylum as the special commitment of the American people.   And yet the article had enumerated a couple of reasons why despite the special commitment, the entrance of refugees cannot be as lax as those of Mexicans since refugees will only be a public charge, and attention should be paid to the many citizens of the United States who are homeless, unemployed and are struggling as well.   And yet another irony occurs, the strict policy was only on the German Jews and not on the British who were seeking refuge in the United States, and granting visas to Chinese immigrants, justified only by courting alliance with the Chinese during the war. The complete opposite of the experiences of the Jewish refugees were the Mexican workers.   This is actually the second tier of the regulatory policies on immigration by the United States government.   As compared to the European immigrants, the Mexican immigrants had an easier time entering the United States.   Despite the increase in illegal immigration due to inefficient and unmonitored security of the Canadian and Mexican borders, which was blamed on the lack of funds, lack of men and lack of facilities to effectively guard the borders of the United States, there were more legitimate reasons why the Mexican workers were easily granted immigration into the country.    One reason is that there is a need for unskilled workers.   Nativist and restrictionist politicians believed that the reason why Americans are being sent to school is so that they will not do the back-breaking work that unskilled laborers do.   Another reason, which is tied to the first, is that Mexican workers mean cheaper labor.   And lastly, the stay of Mexican migrant workers in the United States is but temporary and they can easily be expelled and sent back to their home countries.   In fact, this was proven when rumors started spreading that even immigrants will be enlisted in the armed forces to fight during the war.   Instantly, the Mexican workers returned to their native countries. Of course, the increase in Mexican guestworkers was not continuous as the Great Depression raised sentiments that the Mexicans were taking the work of the Americans and there was a heightened deportation campaign.   But this did not last long since the construction of highways and the invention of automotive traveling.  Ã‚   Once again, Mexican immigration was on the rise. The abovementioned summary of the article â€Å"Two-Tiered Implementation† definitely shows a great disparity of treatment between the Europeans and the South Americans.   But the same is understandable as the article sufficiently explained the justification for such. The United States, although committed to granting asylum to refugees, is practical in the sense that refugees will be taken care of the public and at the time of the implementation of the nativist immigration policies, the economic situation of the country just does not permit it to loosen immigration of refugees.   But on the other side, the United States gain greatly from the entry of cheap Mexican workers, allowing the Americans to concentrate on skilled jobs, and without having to worry about the deportation of the workers as their native country is just a border away. Indeed, there were good reasons, supported by evidence, that the article posed in explaining the restrictionist regime and the differences in immigration between the Jews and the Mexicans.
